English Walter Moorcroft Pottery Vintage Hibiscus Flower Vase
William Moorcroft began his career in 1897 as a designer at James Macintyre & Co. Ltd in Staffordshire. William’s designs were an instant success and were quickly becoming noticed within the world of ceramics. Florian Ware was the first collection William Moorcroft designed and released under the Macintyre label. In 1913 Moorcroft decided to open up his own ceramic factory in Staffordshire.
The Moorcroft pottery grew in popularity and notoriety. Moorcroft pottery was being sold at prestigious stores as Liberty of London, Harrods and Tiffany & Company. In 1928 Moorcroft was appointed ‘Potters to H.M. The Queen”. Moorcroft remains prized by auction houses across the world and continually fetch high prices.
William’s son Walter took control of the business in 1945 and continued to develop the company to ensure and maintain its artistic qualities. The use of vibrant colors began to be used and dominated the Moorcroft pottery line post 1945. Walter introduced the exotic flowers design into the Moorcroft design which matured in the 1950’s. As demonstrated by the beautiful pot being featured on this blog exotic flowers and vibrant coloration has become a trademark of this beautiful potter house.
Current Moorcroft is being designed by the Moorcroft Design Studio consisting of five world-class ceramic designers. The Design Studio was created in 1997 and has been charged with maintaining and creating high quality design to ensure that Moorcroft pottery remain a prized world class ceramicist.
This Walter Moorcroft vase (1953-1978) has a traditional bulbous form which has been decorated in the 'Hibiscus' pattern. The body of the vase has a deep pine green background and features Moorcroft's distinctive slip-trailing technique. The peach colored blossoms and associated foliage stand out from the dark green ground. The front side of the vase has two blossoms and the back side has one. The antique mark found at the base of the vase has he Moorcroft Royal Warrant paper label stating "By Appointment Potters To The Late Queen Mary". The Royal warrant expired in 1978 on the 25th anniversary of Queen Mary's death.

Approximate measurements: 9-1/2 inches high by 24 inches in diameter at the widest point of the vase by 4 inch mouth opening by 4-1/4 inch base diameter.
