About William Moorcroft

William Moorcroft began his career in 1897 as a designer at James Macintyre & Co. Ltd. in Staffordshire. His designs were an instant success and quickly gained notoriety in the world of ceramics. In 1913, Moorcroft decided to open his own ceramic factory in Staffordshire, and his pottery continued to grow in popularity. Before long, Moorcroft pottery was being sold at prestigious stores such as Liberty of London, Harrods, and Tiffany & Co. In 1928, Moorcroft was appointed "Potter to H.M. the Queen."

This piece, made between 1953 and 1978, has a traditional bulbous form that has been decorated in the "Hibiscus" pattern. The body of the vase has a deep pine green background and features Moorcroft’s distinctive slip-trailing technique. The peach-colored blossoms and associated foliage stand out from the dark green ground. The front side of the vase has two blossoms, and the back side has one. The mark found at the base of the vase has the Moorcroft Royal Warrant paper label stating, "By Appointment Potters To The Late Queen Mary."
